Beguinage

  • Architectural complex which housed beguines, or lay religious women who lived in the community
  • Originally a convent, later women lived together in small houses, informal, and often poor communities that cropped up across Europe after the 12th century
  • The women agreed to obey certain regulations during their stay and contributed to a collective fund
