  • Adjacent to the pool, where water is not always present at the surface, repeated freeze–thaw and evaporation cycles gradually push the thin salt crust into hexagonal honeycomb shapes

Mission Santa Clara de Asís

  • Spanish mission in the city of Santa Clara
  • The mission, which was the eighth in California, was founded in 1777, by the Franciscans
  • Named for Saint Clare of Assisi, who founded the order of the Poor Clares and was an early companion of St. Francis of Assisi
  • This was the first California mission to be named in honor of a woman
  • Santa Clara University was built around the mission, and this is the only mission located on the grounds of a university campus

Santa Monica State Beach

  • Amenities include hiking trails, a recreated Yurok Village, a native plant garden, visitor center, three family campgrounds, two group camps, a camp for hikers and bicyclists, accessible beaches, lookout points, and three group picnic areas
