Levi Ski Resort

  • Levi is a fell located in Finnish Lapland, and the largest ski resort in Finland
  • It is located approximately 170 km (110 mi) north of the Arctic Circle
  • The resort's latitude, north of the Arctic Circle, usually guarantees generous snow cover and sub-freezing temperatures (< 0 °C (32 °F)) throughout winter
  • The latitude of the resort also offers excellent chances of observing the Northern Lights

Arktikum, Rovaniemi

  • Museum and science centre in Rovaniemi, and two separate exhibitions operate at Arktikum, the Arctic Center, and the Provincial Museum of Lapland
  • The exhibitions examine culture, history, and modern life in the Arctic, where concepts such as human life in tune with nature are explored

Suomenlinna

  • Inhabited sea fortress composed of eight islands, of which six have been fortified
  • Suomenlinna is popular with tourists and locals, who enjoy it as a picturesque picnic site
  • Originally named Sveaborg (Castle of the Swedes), or Viapori as referred to by Finnish-speaking Finns, it was renamed in Finnish to Suomenlinna (Castle of Finland) in 1918 for patriotic and nationalistic reasons, though it is still known by its original name in Sweden and by Swedish-speaking Finns
  • The Swedish crown commenced the construction of the fortress in 1748 as protection against Russian expansionism
  • The original plan of the bastion fortress was strongly influenced by the ideas of Vauban, the foremost military engineer of the time, and the principles of the star fort style of fortification, adapted to a group of rocky islands

Helsinki Cathedral

  • Finnish Evangelical Lutheran cathedral of the Diocese of Helsinki, originally built from 1830 to 1852 as a tribute to the Grand Duke of Finland, Tsar Nicholas I of Russia
  • It was also known as St Nicholas's Church until the independence of Finland in 1917

Temppeliaukio Church

Cost: $

  • Lutheran church in the Helsinki, opened in 1969, built directly into solid rock, it is also known as the Church of the Rock
  • When conductor Paavo Berglund shared his knowledge of acoustics from some of the best music halls and the acoustical engineer gave requirements for the wall surfaces, the architects discovered that they could fulfill all the requirements for the acoustics by leaving the rock walls exposed in the Church Hall

Kiasma

  • Contemporary art museum located in Helsinki, established in 1990, its central goal being to showcase contemporary art and to strengthen its status
  • The collections include works by around 8,000 artists

Uspenski Cathedral

  • Greek Orthodox or Eastern Orthodox cathedral in Helsinki, and main cathedral of the Orthodox Church of Finland, dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos (the Virgin Mary)
  • It is the largest Greek Orthodox church in Western Europe
  • After Helsinki was made into the capital of Finland in 1812, Alexander I decreed in 1814 that 15 percent of the salt import tax were to be collected into a fund for two churches, one Lutheran and one Orthodox
  • Used in construction of the cathedral, 700,000 bricks were brought over in barges from the Bomarsund Fortress that had been demolished in the Crimean War

Market Square, Helsinki

  • Central square in Helsinki, bordering the Baltic Sea to the south and Katajanokka to the east, and in the summer there are also private companies providing ferry cruises, both to Suomenlinna and to other nearby islands
  • From spring to autumn, the Market Square is active with vendors selling fresh Finnish food and souvenirs

Sibelius Monument

  • Sculpture monument by Finnish artist Eila Hiltunen titled Passio Musicae, dedicated to the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, unveiled in 1967
  • It consists of series of more than 600 hollow steel pipes welded together in a wave-like pattern, and the sculptor's aim was to capture the essence of the music of Sibelius
